Earlier this month, a federal judge approved settlements in several class action suits against manufacturers of defective drywall which affected thousands of property owners in Florida and other locations. The drywall at the heart of these cases was manufactured in China and had been imported to the U.S. over the last 10 years or more. Much of it was used in Florida and Gulf Coast locations that were hit hard by hurricanes and so underwent a great deal of home rebuilding. The drywall turned out to be improperly made and emitted a number of sulfurous gasses. Residents and property owners in buildings that had used the Chinese drywall complained of a rotten egg smell and some reported experiencing respiratory problems, headaches and sinus ailments. Tests of the product revealed that some of the chemicals in the drywall emitted carbon disulfide, hydrogen sulfide and other sulfides. These emissions and their effects were amplified in humid, high temperature environments. The chemicals coming from the drywall were found to react with copper piping wiring turning it black with corrosion. Judge Orders Hundreds of Millions be Paid to Property Owners
U.S. District Judge Eldon Fallon ordered that hundreds of millions of dollars be paid by manufacturers as well as certain retailers and installers that were responsible for putting such a defective and hazardous product in homes and businesses. It is estimated that up to 20,000 homes that were damaged by hurricanes in 2005 used the Chinese drywall during repair construction. Over $1 billion will be paid so homes affected by the drywall can be repaired while a separate fund of up to $30 million will be paid to those who suffered illness or other health problems as a result of the toxic material.
