Drunk Driver Sentenced in Fatal Hit and Run Case

A 50-year-old Miami man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and five years probation after pleading guilty to a variety of serious DUI charges. The fatal collision happened last year when R.A. was driving his pickup truck while under the influence of alcohol. He was near the intersection of 79^th Street and 27^th Avenue when he crashed into a bus stop on the northwest corner. Two pedestrians waiting at the bus stop were severely injured. R.A. reportedly sped off from the scene but a witness in a nearby vehicle followed the man and was able to get the pickup over to the side of the road. Police arrived and took R.A. into custody on suspicion of DUI and hit and run. Paramedics had been called to the accident scene where one of the two male victims was pronounced dead. The second man, C.W., was rushed to the hospital in critical condition with life threatening injuries. Doctors fought for several weeks in the hopes that C.W. would recover but he eventually succumbed to his injuries and died over a month after the accident. Police reports state that R.A.'s blood alcohol concentration at the time of his arrest was 0.332 percent, over four times the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
