A man has been sentenced to 12 years behind bars and ordered to pay $30 million in compensatory damages after he was found guilty of causing a crash that claimed the lives of two people. He now awaits the jury's decision on how much he is to pay in punitive damages. The victims, a married couple from Maryland, were in Miami on vacation. They were driving their rental car on Tamiami Trail when T.C. crossed the center line and went into oncoming traffic. His pickup truck collided with the couple's rental car head on. The husband and wife suffered catastrophic injuries and died. Police arrested T.C. and discovered that he was driving with a suspended license after a DUI conviction. He had two prior DUI charges on his record but reports didn't state if he had been convicted on both of those charges. A blood alcohol concentration test revealed that his BAC was three times the legal limit at the time of the fatal crash. He was taken into custody and charged with felony DUI as well as other offenses. If a drunk or drugged driver caused your injury crash then speak with a personal injury lawyer about your legal rights for recovering damages and other compensation.
Getting Justice after an Injury Wreck Caused by a Drunk Driver
Drivers who choose to get behind the wheel while intoxicated are not only putting themselves at risk but also the lives of their passengers, occupants of other vehicles, pedestrians and others. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 30 percent of car accident fatalities are caused by intoxicated drivers. While no injury or fatality accident is acceptable, the fact that so many are caused by this form of extreme recklessness is staggering. Individuals who are so careless and negligent should be held responsible for their actions in not only criminal court but civil court as well.
