Ambien is a brand name for the drug zolpidem, a popular prescription medicine used to treat insomnia. According to the National Institute of Health, this drug decreases the time to fall asleep in the average person by 18 minutes but comes with a host of side effects. These side effects include headache, dizziness, nausea, short-term memory loss, delusions, impaired reasoning, and more serious reactions such as sleep-walking, sleep-eating, and even sleep-driving. Those who sleepwalk while under the influence of Ambien may act like someone awake, carry on conversations, or perform tasks; they are, however, under the strong hypnotic effect of the drug and often have no memory of their actions.
Sleepwalking and related activities as a result of prescription sleep medicines have been the subject of warnings by federal officials. The FDA required warnings on the labels of such products made by 13 different drug manufacturers. The warning reads that after taking Ambien, the user may get up without being fully awake and engage in activities he or she does not remember doing, such as driving a car, making and eating food, talking to someone on the phone, and even having sex. Because of its questionable side effects, the Mayo Clinic has phased out its use of Ambien for hospital patients. Sanofi-Aventis, Ambien's manufacturer, has been targeted with lawsuits by individuals claiming the company failed to fully disclose the drug's potentially dangerous side effects.
