According to a British psychiatrist who founded rxisk.org, a website devoted to research into prescription drugs, approximately 90 percent of the school shooters who engaged in violent acts over the last decade had been prescribed and had taken psychiatric drugs. These drugs were often antidepressants known as SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Such drugs can provoke violence in users, per this doctor, "up to and including homicide." Suicidal thinking is one of the boxed warnings which the FDA requires all manufacturers to put on the labeling of such SSRIs. Other side effect warnings include those concerning birth defects in infants born to women who take SSRIs during pregnancy.
In the journal Ethical Human Sciences and Services, a Harvard-trained psychiatrist who is also a former consultant at the National Institute of Mental Health reported that evidence from case reports, studies, and trials on SSRIs showed that they could contribute to suicide, violence, and abnormal behavior in both children and adults. He testified at a congressional hearing in 2010 that medical research reveals a cause and effect relationship between these psychiatric drugs and such behavior.

The above information illustrates the potential dangers, which are often unknown or unreported, of prescription medicines which alter the chemistry of the brain and other organs and systems in the body. Such drugs can have dangerous side effects for consumers, leading to serious physical and mental health harm. Those who suffer such consequences may have grounds for a personal injury claim against the manufacturers of such drugs, which are often large pharmaceutical companies.
