The driver of a bakery delivery truck and his passenger were involved in a fatal single vehicle wreck which occurred early in the morning. The truck was on its way to deliver frozen bakery goods when it hit a concrete barrier wall on an Interstate 95 overpass. The truck then went up and over a wall and was dangling off the overpass, pinned against a pillar which supported an upper overpass. The pillar likely kept the delivery truck from falling onto the roadway below. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue was called to the scene around 5:30 am and had to secure the vehicle before the two occupants of the truck could be rescued. The driver, 53 years old, had suffered minor injuries and was removed from the cab of the truck by a rescuer on a fire truck ladder. The passenger who had suffered fatal injuries could not be removed from the cab until the truck was put back onto the roadway. The passenger side of the truck cab had collided head on with the overpass support pillar mangling the cab and killing the man. Authorities Continue Crash Investigation
Investigators are continuing to look into the fatal accident in an attempt to discover what exactly caused the crash. The driver of the bakery truck was reportedly making a left turn from the I-95 north to the on ramp for State Road 84 west. The driver apparently lost control of the commercial truck and hit the wall. Authorities have not released any findings so far on whether it was driver error or if there was some mechanical problem which led to the deadly crash.
