Florida has been ranked as having one of the worst bicycle and pedestrian safety records in the country and the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach area was ranked as the fourth most dangerous large metro area in the United States when it came to pedestrian injuries and deaths. The report released by Transportation America showed that there were over 1,500 pedestrian deaths from 2000 to 2009. In light of this data and in an effort to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety in Ft. Lauderdale the city hosted a "Safety Party" in the downtown area. A section of NE 3rd Street was closed off to vehicle traffic for the event which was held for several hours. The purpose of the event was to increase awareness to drivers, pedestrians and cyclists alike of actions that can be taken to improve safety. The Safety Party was part of the Florida Department of Transportation program started in 2012 to educate communities about the importance of street safety. The program's slogan, "Safety doesn't happen by accident" was augmented by the event's theme of "Alert today, alive tomorrow". Activities included teaching children and adults alike various tips for safely bike riding in high traffic areas as well as simple instructions for ensuring safe use of crosswalks. An often disregarded or unknown law requiring that vehicles keep a distance of at least three feet away from pedestrians and cyclists was also emphasized. It is hoped that these activities will help reduce the number of injuries and deaths in Ft. Lauderdale caused by car accidents involving pedestrians or bike riders.
