Nearly everyone has taken an antibiotic in their life or had a child or family member do so. Since their inception, antibiotics have clearly saved lives and helped countless individuals recover from infections such as strep throat, bronchitis, and pneumonia. A modern class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, however, has turned out to have serious side effects which have resulted in significant health damage to certain individuals. This class of antibiotics includes such well-known brands as Cipro, Levaquin, and Avelox. Levaquin is commonly prescribed for pneumonia and was the most popular selling antibiotic in the county in 2010. According to a New York Times article, however, it may be too strong a drug for the job, considering the side effects associated with it. Because of these severe side effects, more than 2,000 lawsuits have been filed by individuals who have been harmed by taking them.
Side effects from fluoroquinolones include detachment of the retina, kidney failure, joint problems, injury to other major organs, such as the heart, liver, and gastrointestinal system. These antibiotics can also negatively affect the central nervous system, resulting in depression, hallucinations, and brain fog. Those who suffer such serious reactions may not recover immediately after stopping usage of the drugs. Furthermore, in some cases these symptoms may show up weeks or months later, creating a mystery of how they were caused. Because of the potential for such health damage, the FDA has included a black box warning for these prescriptions. Unfortunately, many people pay little attention to such warnings and fail to query their doctors about possible reactions.
