The Florida Traffic Crash Statistics report, published by the state each year, shows that motorcycle crashes have decreased overall in Florida. After the repeal of the helmet law in 2000, motorcycle accidents increased consistently through 2008. In 2001, motorcycle crashes numbered 5,766. By 2008, they had increased to 9,618. In 2009, the number dropped to 8,313 and in 2010 dropped even lower to 7,484 crashes. This decrease in motorcycle accidents is excellent news for the state, even though any traffic accident resulting in injuries or death is always a tragic situation for those involved.
Motorcycle fatalities have also decreased in Florida in the last five years. Statewide motorcycle fatalities stood at 521 in 2006, decreasing to 350 in 2010. The counties with the highest motorcycle fatality rates in 2010 were Volusia, Pinellas, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade, Broward, Duval, and Hillsborough. Motorcycles have continued to grow in popularity throughout Florida with registrations increasing in the last decade. The majority of motorcyclists are male and many are in the 45 to 55 age group. Florida is home to many motorcycle rallies and events.
