Early in September, a 19 year-old freshman defensive back at West Alabama was killed in a traffic crash in a two-vehicle accident that occurred on U.S. Highway 43. The crash occurred near the player's hometown of Linden, Alabama and also claimed the life of his 12 year-old cousin. According to news accounts, the vehicle the football player was driving collided with an 18-wheeler.
Traffic crashes between smaller passenger vehicles and 18-wheelers are among the most dangerous and deadly of all accidents. Statistics relating to such accidents place the risk of injury or death for the occupants of passengers cars involved in them at close to 98 percent. Because of their enormous size and weight, 18-wheelers are lethal weapons when striking cars, causing horrendous damage. When traveling at highway speeds, these commercial trucks are difficult to stop fast and have many blind spots which can obscure the driver's view of others on the road.
Accidents involving commercial trucks are generally much more complicated legal matters than other traffic crashes. Commercial trucks are subject to both state and federal regulations and many entities may need to be investigated in the matter of fault, from the driver to those who maintain the trucks, load the trucks, as well as the trucking company itself. That is why those who are injured in such accidents should seek immediate legal counsel from a law firm experienced in handling trucking accident claims and lawsuits in their local area.
