Intrauterine devices (IUD) were commonly used many decades ago to prevent pregnancy. They fell out of popular use, however, in the 70’s and 80’s due to problems such as perforated uteruses, ectopic pregnancies, and other injuries. In 2000, a new IUD, Bayer’s Mirena, was approved for use in the U.S. by the FDA. It is a small, white T-shaped plastic device which slowly releases a type of birth control hormone which requires placement by a doctor. Bayer recommended the device for women who have had at least one child; the device was promoted as being safe and effective for a period of five years.
According to a doctor in Texas, however, the device has a high incidence of complications, which include perforation of the uterus, embedding in the walls of the uterus, migration into the walls of the abdomen and perforation of other vital organs, such as the liver, intestines, stomach, and more. The FDA informed Bayer in 2009 that the company had failed to conduct proper research into the potential side effects associated with its use before it began promoting it. The FDA claimed that Bayer overstated its effectiveness, made claims which were not substantiated, and played down any risks involved for prospective users. Since then, many lawsuits have been initiated against the company by those who have been injured due to its use; the lawsuits state that it is a defective product.
