According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2009, Alabama saw 267 deaths from traffic accidents involving alcohol-impaired drivers. These deaths comprised 31 percent of all traffic fatalities in the state that year. In 2010, the alcohol-impaired traffic fatalities increased to 279, which was 32 percent of all traffic deaths in the state. This was a 4.5 percent increase; Alabama was one of the few states with an increasing fatality rate in alcohol-impaired deaths.
Alcohol-impaired driving is a serious problem in Alabama and across the nation. Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) reports that the average drunk driver gets behind the wheel of his car approximately 80 times before an arrest. Other studies show that 50 percent up to 75 percent of drunk drivers continue to drive on a suspended license. MADD reports that someone is injured in a drunk driving traffic crash at a rate of almost every 90 seconds in this country. The NHTSA reported that a person died in a drunk driving accident every 53 minutes in 2011 and that one in three people in this country will be involved in a drunk driving crash at some point during their lifetime. These statistics show the horrific effect that drunk driving has on all of us. Those who are injured or who lose loved ones in alcohol-related crashes are victims whose lives can change forever due to the irresponsibility of a drunk driver.
