Police Chase Ends In Tragedy in Palm Springs

Law Enforcement Officer Dies In Horrible Auto Accident

A high-speed pursuit in Palm Springs ended abruptly on Friday when a policeman and the suspects crashed their cars, fatally wounding the officer.

The tragic incident began innocently enough, as the law enforcement agent noticed a speeding car driving down Date Palm Drive at about 11:30 PM, just south of Interstate 10. After radioing in the report, the Cathedral City officer he discovered that the car had been reported stolen, and realized that the driver of the vehicle was a wanted parolee.

The chase began, with the officer pursuing the suspects in their Black Mustang. Over the next half hour or so he chased after the vehicle, being joined by two fellow officers who followed behind. The pursuit carried the four north along Palm Canyon Drive at high speed.

Both Officer And Suspects Crash And Burn

Eventually, the chase reached Mesquite Avenue, at which point the officer in the lead reportedly lost control of his patrol cruiser. His vehicle slipped off the road at tremendous speed, colliding violently with a palm tree and bursting into flames. Almost immediately following this, the Mustang carrying the suspects lost control as well, crashing into another palm tree not far north of the first collision and also igniting with flames.

The two suspects were rushed to the hospital where they remain in critical condition. One was thrown clear of the vehicle, but another was caught inside the flaming wreckage. The officer, however, did not survive his accident, and was declared dead on the scene.

A memorial has been established at the scene of the accident, after an outpouring of public support for the policeman and his fellows involved in the chase.
