Palm Springs Accident Leaves Officer Dead And Suspects Injured
In a tragic automotive accident, a Cathedral City police officer involved in a chase lost control of his vehicle and fatally collided with a tree, reports the Desert Sun.
According to the police report, the incident began when the officer noticed a Black Mustang speeding on Date Palm Drive at about 11:30 p.m. on Friday, March 18th. After checking in, he was informed that the driver of the vehicle was a wanted parolee and that the Mustang was believed to have been stolen.
The officer began a high speed of the Mustang, followed closely behind by two follow Cathedral City police cruisers. They pursuit carried the police and the suspects north along Palm Canyon Drive, at which point the leading officer lost control of his police cruiser just north of Mesquite Avenue, crashing into a palm tree at terrific speed.
The police cruiser reportedly burst into flames immediately, fatally wounding the officer inside, who was pronounced dead at the scene when emergency medical technicians arrived. Only moments after the officer’s loss of control and subsequent collision, the Mustang also swerved out of control of the driver, crashing into yet another Palm Tree and bursting into flames, throwing one from the car and leaving one trapped inside.
The suspects were able to be saved and are currently in a hospital in critical condition.
