A local Coral Springs medical building was evacuated in the early evening recently. Several patients and staff at the facility reported having trouble breathing and experiencing eye irritation. Authorities were called to the scene and then an alarm was sounded to have everyone evacuate the building. Ten people were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of possible exposure to a hazardous material. Those affected were sprayed down by Hazmat teams and fire rescue crews that promptly arrived on the scene. Investigators made their way through the building to determine what the cause of the problem was which left patients and nurses feeling ill. It was soon determined that a woman at the building had accidentally dispensed some pepper spray from a canister she had in her purse. The pepper spray entered the building's ventilation system and was distributed to several areas in the medical facility. The spray then caused irritation to the eyes, throat and lungs of some people in those areas. Actions were taken to clear the pepper spray from the ventilation system and any rooms or other areas that were affected. The woman who had the canister was not charged with any crime since it was determined to have been an accident. There were no reports indicating whether or not any civil suits would be pursued, however. Speak with a personal injury attorney to find out if you have a case and are entitled to compensation for your injuries.
