Mother Crashes Van After Failing To Stop At Sign

While driving her daughters to school, a West Palm Beach woman missed a stop sign and collided with an oncoming car, leaving her three young children injured. The oldest girl was flown to the hospital by emergency medical personnel, where she remains in critical condition.

The incident took place in early hours of the morning on Thursday, November 15, when the driver was transporting her young children to elementary school. The 32-year old mother says she was helping her daughters prepare for a spelling test they had later in the day, quizzing them as they sat in the back seat. As she drove eastward across Citrus Grove Boulevard, the woman says they were trying to spell the word "remember" when she noticed a car come speeding towards her as she crossed Hall Boulevard.

The mother, who had failed to notice the stop sign posted at the intersection, was struck on the rear driver's side by a 2002 Dodge pickup. The van carrying the family was sent careening sideways, where they collided with a third vehicle that was parked at the stop sign.

Brain Surgery Required For Young Victim

Both the 42-year old driver of the pickup and the 54-year old man driving the third car were rattled but unharmed in the aftermath of the accident. The mother sustained minor injuries but was mostly unhurt. The same could not be said for her daughters, who took the brunt of both impacts. Police said that everyone was wearing seatbelts during the collision, which spared most of those involved from serious injury.

The youngest daughters, two 6-year old twins, suffered from minor injuries and were driven to St. Mary's Medical Center, where they were released after receiving treatment. The oldest girl, aged 7, was diagnosed by emergency responders with bleeding in her brain and was taken to the hospital by helicopter. She was hooked up to respirators, and remains in critical condition after undergoing brain surgery.

Medical personnel informed the girl's family that she will be at a critical stage for the next few days. The mother, still in shock from the incident, told reporters that she was grateful for the response from the community, many of whom stopped at the scene of the accident to help. As many as fifteen bystanders pulled over to render aid, using crowbars on the doors of the van to get the injured girls out of the wreckage.
