A tour bus operator, Scapadas Magicas LLC, whose tour bus crashed in early February of this year, resulting in both injuries and deaths, had failed 36 percent of its random federal vehicle inspections in the past two years. The failed inspections included such issues as tire and brake problems, according to ABC News and the Associated Press. The tour bus crashed on a remote road about 80 miles east of Los Angeles, as it was descending from the Big Bear area, heading south. The bus may have had brake problems and was apparently speeding when it rear-ended another car on the mountain road which led to its flipping over and crashing into a pickup truck.
The California Highway Patrol said speed was a factor in the crash, which killed eight passengers and injured more than three dozen. The driver of the tour bus indicated there was a problem with the brakes. The crash was also under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) due to the seriousness of the crash and its fatalities. The NHTSA will look at all possible factors which may have caused the crash, including the mechanics and maintenance of the bus itself. Such investigations take up to a year and half to complete, according to the NHTSA which is constantly on the alert to improve transportation safety in this country.
