Recent video footage of the high school swimming class where a 14-year-old boy drowned showed that he had been underwater for 17 minutes. Family, friends and teachers still in mourning over the loss of the teen were shocked to find out that the boy had gone unnoticed for nearly 20 minutes at the bottom of the pool. An anonymous source told a Hartford paper that the video showed the teen, M.D., get into the deep end of the pool and then immediately go under water. He is not seen resurfacing. Students were swimming above him the whole time until one student noticed M.D. at the bottom of the pool and got the instructor's attention. The instructor then dove in to get him out of the pool and administered CPR while 911 was called. No one knew at the time how long the teen had been under water. He was rushed to the nearest hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The medical examiner ruled it an accidental drowning.
M.D. and his family had recently immigrated to Connecticut from Ghana and had made many friends at his new high school. He was described as an "inexperienced swimmer" and it was unclear whether or not sufficient supervision was provided for the class. Speak to a personal injury lawyer immediately if you feel negligence was involved in a drowning or pool accident case. Injuries and drowning accidents can occur in a wide variety of activities involving a pool, hot tub or bodies of water such as lakes, rivers and the ocean. Negligent supervision, lack of appropriate safety measures such as life jackets or fencing around a pool as well as alcohol impairment can all lead to serious injuries and loss of life. In fact, drowning is the second highest cause of accidental child deaths in the U.S. after car crashes. Make sure those liable are held responsible for their neglect or recklessness which resulted in the injury or death of a loved one.
