An elderly woman was apprehended while driving the wrong way on I-580, reports Mercury News.
Witnesses began calling the California Highway Patrol at approximately 8:50 pm, law enforcement officials announced. The reports indicated that a Toyota convertible, dark in color, was driving against traffic on Interstate Highway 580.
The vehicle was traveling slowly, at about 15 to 20 miles per hour, with no headlights on, and was drifting between the center divider and the number 1 lane. The tires of the convertible were in poor shape, and both of the tires on the passenger-side were completely missing, with only bare metal scraping against the road. The initial report spotted the vehicle in Richmond, near Regatta Boulevard.
Officers responded quickly to the report, and at 9:00 pm the CHP stopped the car just after the driver passed the toll plaza at the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Police were able to take her into custody without injury.
Woman Taken into Care Of Family
The driver was revealed to be a 75-year old native of Corte Madera. According to the initial report, she was exhibiting signs of dementia when Patrol Officers took her into custody. Currently, the police do not believe she was under the influence of any drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident.
After removing her from harms way, police placed her in the care of several nearby relatives. They also took possession of the Toyota. She has been cited by the CHP for priority re-evaluation of her driving privileges by the DMV.
