Two people were seriously injured and a third died after a severe head on collision. Friends K.R. and D.M., both in their early 20s were in K.R.'s compact SUV on U.S. 1 on their way to the Keys. Both individuals had been allegedly drinking and were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. K.R. had been driving her vehicle when she rear ended another car. No injuries resulted from that accident but reports state that K.R. switched places with her male passenger, D.M., and the two drove off from the accident scene without properly exchanging information with the other driver in the vehicle that was hit. Shortly after that incident, D.M. apparently crossed over into oncoming traffic lanes, possibly while fleeing the previous accident, and ran head on into a minivan taxi. D.M. had been driving north in a left turn lane, crossed several lanes of southbound traffic and crashed into the taxi which was in a right turn lane. The force of the collision caused the minivan's engine to catch fire. The 71-year-old taxi driver as well as K.R. and D.M. were all seriously injured. Florida Highway Patrol and Fire-Rescue arrived on the scene to render aid. The mangled SUV had to be cut apart to free its occupants. The taxi driver was in serious condition and transported by ambulance to nearby hospital. K.R. and D.M. were airlifted back to a Miami trauma center in critical condition. K.R. succumbed to her injuries and died later that night. D.M.'s current condition was not stated but FHP investigators are reportedly in discussions with the state Attorney's Office regarding filing charges against him.
