Accidents occurring on farms or with the use of farming equipment can lead to serious injuries and even death. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 243 farm workers are injured badly enough every day to put them out of work while 26 deaths per every 1,000 farm workers occurs in the United States. Common farm accidents include tractor rollovers, accidents involving grain elevators, balers, mowers, field cultivators, harvesters, and other farming equipment as well as pickup truck accidents, toxic exposure and chemical burns.
Recent examples of farm accidents include an Iowa farmer who died after being pinned under a field cultivator in Keota, Iowa at the beginning of November of this year. In Sidney, Ohio on November 25, a farmer who was using a tractor to feed cattle ended up getting his leg caught in equipment. The man lost his leg but survived the accident. In Abilene, Kansas a five year-old girl fell into a moving combine and died as a result. The girl was riding with her father in the combine when it hit a bump, shattering its windshield, after which the girl fell out and into the machine. Finally, in late September a 17 year-old was killed in a farming accident in Heidelberg Township, Pennsylvania. The boy was helping a neighbor with a corn harvest when his leg got caught in a corn bale and he was pulled into the machine.
