Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy as well as officials with the MTA which operates the Metro-North Railroad spoke at a conference held recently in Hartford to give information and address concerns on the train derailment that injured over 70 passengers. Commutes into and out of New York were expected to be severely delayed for a week or more as the tracks are repaired and tested at the site of the incident. Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are conducting a thorough investigation of the location where the two trains collided in an effort to discover what caused the accident. Officials are determined to ensure the lines are repaired and sound before service is restored.
The crash occurred on Friday evening a little after 6:00 when an eastbound train going from Grand Central Station in New York to New Haven derailed near Bridgeport. That train was then hit by a westbound train. There were approximately 700 people total on board both trains and 72 people required hospital treatment. Many others suffered minor injuries and were treated at the accident scene. Only two people were listed as being in critical condition and there were no fatalities at the crash site. Many were astonished at the relatively low number of injuries considering the mangled and chaotic wreck of the two trains. Spokespersons with the MTA credit the higher safety standards with which new train cars on the line are built. Inspectors Still Looking for Exact Cause of Derailment
Safety inspectors are going through the crash site with a fine tooth comb to determine what caused the eastbound train to derail. One section of broken track was being heavily scrutinized at one point but it wasn't clear if that break occurred before or during the collision. The investigators are examining all train and railway systems from brakes and tracks to rail signals and others.
