A mining accident at the Revenue Virginius mine in southwestern Colorado has left two men dead of carbon monoxide poisoning. 20 other miners were injured in the incident and treated at hospitals before being released. Authorities are still trying to determine what went wrong. A thorough investigation will be conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The two miners who died both entered an area of the mine where an explosive had been detonated the previous day to remove rock. It is thought that the previous blast may have been the source of the carbon monoxide poisoning. Federal authorities have required that the mine operator submit to them a plan for re-entry into the mine so that they can determine that all dangerous gases have been removed and proper ventilation is in place.
In a recent news release by NPR, it was stated that one of the dead miners had entered the mine alone. When he didn't return, a mining foreman entered the mine. Both men were later found by a rescue team which determined that they had been affected by fatal levels of carbon monoxide. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration, explosions and fires in mines are a typical cause of such dangerous gases in underground mines.
