In 2012, 1,310 people died in traffic accidents on Pennsylvania roads and highways. This was an increase since the all-time record low in 2009 of 1,256 fatalities. The majority of traffic accidents in the state are speed-related, followed by distracted driving, improper turning, drunk drivers, proceeding without clearance, tailgating, careless or illegal passing, and drowsy drivers. Approximately one-third of all traffic fatalities are associated with drunk drivers. 76 percent of drunk drivers involved in traffic crashes are male and 76 percent of these crashes occur in darkness, usually on weekends.
Other traffic accidents in the state involve motorcyclists, pedestrians, and bicyclists. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, pedestrians account for 11.6 percent of all traffic fatalities. In 2011, 199 people died in motorcycle accidents; 189 of these were the motorcycle operators and 10 were their passengers. Bicycle crashes made up the smallest amount of traffic deaths at 0.9 percent. The age groups with the highest percentage of traffic accidents were 21 – 25 years old, followed by those aged 16 to 20. 53 percent of the total crashes in the state occur in just 10 of its counties; Allegheny County is one of the counties with the highest number of crashes. Overall, car accident injuries occur approximately every six minutes on the roads and highways in the state.
Pittsburgh Personal Injury and Wrongful Death Firm
Traffic accidents account for the largest majority of personal injury claims in Pennsylvania. These claims are based on the negligence of drivers as well as other entities, such as the manufacturers of defective auto parts and vehicles. In the aftermath of such accidents, drivers and passengers often must deal with insurance companies. This can be a frustrating experience with these companies engaging in tactics that may discount, delay, or deny claims. Other complications can arise from those who are involved in accidents with uninsured or underinsured drivers.
