Propecia is the brand name of a synthetic drug used to treat male pattern baldness. It is manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Merck, which began marketing it in 1997. In the last few years, however, hundreds of lawsuits against Merck have been filed in both state and federal courts based on allegations of men who took the drug and suffered negative side effects such as erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, impotence, infertility, depression, anxiety disorders, and insomnia. Other side effects associated with use of the drug include ejaculation disorders, testicular pain, male breast cancer, prostate cancer, suicidal thoughts, loss of memory, loss of concentration, and other psychological and emotional trauma. The lawsuits against Merck contend that users have been subjected to these serious side effects and that such effects continue even after the drug has been discontinued.
More than 400 adverse side effect reports have been received by the FDA which prompted the FDA to order Merck to update its warning label to state that such side effects have continued in patients after they stopped using the drug. The lawsuits also state that Merck had knowledge about these side effects but failed to warn doctors and patients about them. In April of this year, a new Propecia lawsuit was filed against the company in federal court by a man in Utah. This latest lawsuit contends that the man was subject to cognitive impairment, sexual dysfunction, and depression after using the hair loss drug. He had never had these problems prior and they did not disappear after he stopped taking Propecia.
