Tampa Bay Victim Loses Life In DUI Collision
Authorities have released the identity of a driver they say is responsible for the high-speed crash that took two lives in late September, charging him with an array of offenses for the alleged misdeeds.
According to the investigators, the suspect was engaged in what may have been an illegal street race when he lost control of his vehicle. The twenty-year old Florida native was driving at high speed along Gulf Boulevard when he first drew the attention of police, heading south. He was allegedly travelling at sixty-nine miles per hour in a thirty-five mile per hour zone when law enforcement officials caught up to him, and sped up even further when signaled to pull over.
The increase in speed proved too much for the young man to handle, and his silver GMC Yukon SUV careened out of control, colliding with another SUV carrying two passengers. The driver of the second vehicle, a thirty-two year old man from Tampa, was killed in the accident, along with his female passenger, after their 2006 Mazda was sent off the road and into a fountain in front of a beach resort.
Investigators Seek Second Driver for Questioning
Both victims died before they could be taken to a hospital. The suspect, who was thrown from his vehicle into the street, was rushed to a medical facility, from which he was released on October 18th. Police immediately placed him under arrest.
The case has been turned over to the hands of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Major Accident Investigation Team. According to their office, witnesses to the crime reported a second vehicle that was involved in what may have been a race with the suspect. Though no information has been released as to the driver of this second car, the vehicle is described as a maroon or purple minivan.
Police say they have charged the suspect with DUI manslaughter, aggravated fleeing and eluding, and driving with a suspended license causing death. He is being held in jail on a $101,000 bond.
