Common Injuries that "Hide"
The most common injuries in car accidents include:
• Whiplash (injury to the neck muscles)
• Bruising or tearing of muscles, tendons, and ligaments
• Concussions
• Spinal trauma and injuries
• Post traumatic stress disorder
A Closer Look at Whiplash and Concussions
Whiplash and concussion symptoms can be difficult to recognize. While whiplash usually result in stiffness, dizziness, or headaches, it can also cause muscle spasms, numbness, and weakness. You might not directly associate these things to "whiplash." Physical therapy will be needed to improve any whiplash symptoms you have.
Concussions often result in headaches, irritability and fatigue. These are all likely feelings after a car accident. But a concussion can also cause but blurred vision, ringing in the ears, disorientation or confusion, and loss of balance. Concussions can be extremely dangerous, and you'll need to consult medical attention immediately if you notice any of these warning signs.
A spinal injury might take weeks before demonstrating any noticeable symptoms. The symptoms range from pain in your back to pain or numbness in your foot. This is because it often takes weeks for an injured disc to actually degenerate to the point of causing pain.
Take Some Time
If you've been in a car accident, allow yourself some time, and some time for your body to recover and adjust. Even if you feel like everything is okay, and there is no pain, it's advised that you check in with your doctor to make sure that you aren't harboring any "hidden" injuries. Also, keep a journal of the accident - including any small injuries you might have experienced. Sometimes writing things down helps you keep track of any fleeting symptoms. Describe your pain as "moderate" or "severe" in your journal. This will help a lawyer later on if they need to build a case for you.
