Hit and Run?
Originally the accident that occurred just north of Osborn Road in the area of 43rd Avenue and Crittenden Lane, was reported as a hit-and-run. Further investigation did not show evidence of that, as revealed by Sgt. Tommy Thompson.
The Accident
According to Thompson, a driver swerved to avoid hitting a man he believed to be lying in the roadway at about 8:30 p.m. The driver stopped and exited his vehicle to check on the man. At the same time another car, a Toyota Camry also attempted to avoid the man, but ran over him.
The 69-year-old man who was in the roadway was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives have still not been able to notify the next of kin. The driver of the Toyota Camry, a 20-year-old man remained at the scene. Both he and the 19-year-old female passenger in his car were not injured.
Not a Hit-and-Run Car Accident
According to Thompson, the driver was evaluated for impairment. At this point it has been ruled out. Thompson also went on to say there was a bicycle near the victim. Damage to the bike indicated it had been run over by a vehicle. Yet there was no other evidence in the roadway, and no witnesses around to be able to corroborate a hit-and-run collision, as had been initially reported.
Investigators have ruled the victim might have been riding the bike and had crashed, or perhaps had fallen off his bicycle already, and was in the road trying to get up when he was hit by the Toyota. The Toyota might have also run over the bike’s tire – causing the damage that was found.
Thompson also believes there may be additional witnesses who might have left the scene. Obviously, they have not been located or interviewed.
