A car accident, involving four vehicles severely injured motorists and shut down the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 near downtown Phoenix for most of the day. An Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman said the collision occurred shortly after 11 a.m. The lanes were reopened at about 3 p.m.
The Accident
The car accident occurred after a U-Haul truck traveling eastbound attempted to make a lane change when it clipped two vehicles, causing a the driver of a Nissan Altima to lose control, crossing the median into westbound lanes. According to DPS spokesman, Officer Carrick Cook, the Nissan Altima hit a pick up truck head-on. According to initial reports, the U-Haul truck fled the scene and continued eastbound even thought it had sustained minor damage to the right end side, Cook said.
Injuries
The Altima driver suffered serious injuries. The passenger in the Altima, as well as the truck driver suffered minor injuries. All victims were transported to the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, according to Cook.
Transportation officials were forced to close the surrounding roads. "We understand the concerns of drivers out there," he said. "We are doing everything we can to make sure we get this open." Within minutes of the car accident, traffic was backed up past 32nd Street. Transportation officials warned drivers to expect long delays if traveling through the area.
