Information concerning the possible cause of a parking garage collapse that claimed four lives came to light recently as a lawsuit on behalf of one of the killed construction workers continued. The accident occurred in October last year during the construction of a parking structure at the Miami Dade College Doral campus. Five floors of the unfinished structure collapsed and pancaked down on one another. 15 workers were injured in the collapse including four individuals which sustained fatal injuries. It took massive numbers of fire rescue crews to search for survivors. K-9 units were also called in to aid in the search. Two men were pronounced dead at the scene and another was taken to the hospital in critical condition with severe injuries to his legs. The trauma to his legs was so serious that both limbs had to be amputated. Sadly, the man died the next day. Nine other men were transported to the hospital for treatment of moderate to severe injuries and two were treated and released at the scene. A fourth worker was found deceased under the rubble several days later after the collapse occurred. Work with a personal injury attorney if you or a family member was injured in a construction accident.
Improperly Installed Column Blamed for Structure Collapse
The family of one of the men killed in the parking structure accident has brought suit against the construction company that the man worked for. Information from an investigation at the site shows that one of the cement support columns at the garage had been struck by a crane several days before the collapse. That column was thereafter inspected and allegedly deemed uncompromised. It has been argued, however, that one of the columns next to that one had not been properly completed and fully anchored to the flooring. It is further contested that the impact by the crane to the adjacent column caused the building to shift some eventually resulting in the improperly finished column to simply fall over "like a house of cards".
