On Sunday, August 4, pedestrians were injured in two separate accidents in the Portland area. In one incident, a pedestrian was hit by a motorcyclist in the southeast area of the city. The pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital while the motorcyclist sustained minor injuries. No information was available from law enforcement as to how the accident occurred. In a separate incident, another pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries when he was hit by a 2013 Subaru Outback. In that incident, it is believed the pedestrian was drunk; he was seen staggering into the street just prior to the accident and it was stated that he had stopped to lie down by the side of the road. The motorist in the incident was not charged with any violations at the scene.
Pedestrian accidents vary widely from state to state. The states with the highest number of these accidents include California, Florida, Texas, and New York, which comprise 41 percent of the nation's pedestrian fatalities. Oregon ranks as the 30th state out of the 50 in terms of the number of pedestrian traffic fatalities per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The National Safety Council states that 85.7 percent of all pedestrian non-fatal accidents occur in urban areas, such as Portland and its surrounds. Speeding is a major factor in many pedestrian accidents, in which drivers are unable to stop in time to avoid striking the pedestrian. A pedestrian has an 85 percent risk of death when struck by a vehicle traveling at only 40 mph, according to experts.
