The boardwalk at Venice Beach is a popular tourist and local attraction drawing thousands of people every weekend who explore its eclectic shops, restaurants, and the beach itself. On Sunday, August 5 it turned into a small disaster area as a driver drove his Dodge Avenger into a crowd of pedestrians, killing one woman and injuring another 11. The woman was an Italian tourist visiting California on her honeymoon. Her husband was also injured. According to witness statements and surveillance footage taken from a nearby restaurant, the driver acted intentionally, going around yellow poles intended to keep cars off the boardwalk and then deliberately plowing into the crowd of people. He fled the scene but later turned himself into police.
One victim of the incident was listed as in critical condition. Two others were listed in serious condition. Another eight were treated for injuries at a local hospital.
The driver was arrested, charged with murder, and is being held on $1 million bail. No other information was available to news media as to the driver's motivation for the hit-and-run.
