The New York Department of Health reports in its motor vehicle traffic injuries publication that "a crash-related injury is a predictable and preventable event." The report states that auto accidents have patterns which are predictable with risk factors which can be identified. This statement is in line with most studies of traffic accidents, which show that human error is almost always involved and that accidents are not random events. For instance, New York traffic crash statistics show that those who don't wear seatbelts are three times more likely to suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI) than those who do buckle up. Similarly, traffic crashes caused by speeding or the use of alcohol also significantly raise the risk of a TBI and result in some of the most expensive hospital costs of all traffic accidents.
The average hospital expenditure for those injured in New York traffic accidents in 2007 was $37,375 while the average cost for a traffic accident-related emergency room visit was $1519. Traffic crashes are the leading cause of injury deaths in the state, causing pain, suffering, and death as well as a huge economic toll on the state. Per the state government, traffic crashes resulted in $708 million in medical costs in 2007. According to statistics published by the New York DMV, 307,550 traffic accidents occurred in the state in 2011 with 1,077 being fatal accidents. 1,153 people died that year in such accidents.
