A woman who suspected that her 89 year-old grandmother was being abused in the Bronx nursing home that was caring for her took matters into her own hands. The woman placed a hidden camera in her grandmother's room after strange bruising appeared on the elderly woman's hands and face, who suffers from Alzheimer's and dementia. The granddaughter captured 600 hours of footage from the camera, some of it showing her grandmother being abused by a nurse's aide. The abuse was physical, including twisting the elderly woman's arm behind her back and slamming her down on the bed which caused the woman's injuries.
The nurse's aide was arrested and charged and her court case is pending. The granddaughter requested that her grandmother be taken to an emergency room for treatment and safety and later the grandmother was transferred to another nursing home facility. After being investigated due to the incident, the nursing home fired three of its staff. A congressional study done in 2012 found that 30 percent of nursing homes in the U.S. received citations for abuse during the two-year period of 1999 to 2001. The study showed 9,000 instances of abuse that occurred, which included poor medical care, malnutrition, dehydration, poor sanitation and hygiene, preventable accidents, bedsores that went untreated, and more.
