Bayonne Bridge Reopened After Automobile Crash Leaves Victims Wounded
According to New York police, the driver believed to be responsible for a recent traffic collision fled the scene and is currently being sought by authorities. The man was driving an SUV on the Bayonne Bridge, which joins Bayonne to Staten Island, when he allegedly struck another vehicle, injuring the occupants severely.
Investigators with the Port Authority Police say they believe the incident to have occurred in the early hours of the morning on Friday, September 14. According to reports, at approximately 4:00 AM, the victims were attempting to cross the Bayonne Bridge. They were injured, however, when an SUV swerved across the center line and struck them head on.
The Bayonne Bridge was shut down for almost seven hours as authorities investigated the incident. The closing of the major thoroughfare caused traffic problems throughout the city, reporters announced. The passage was finally reopened a little before 11:00 AM.
Suspect Believed To Have Stolen Vehicle Of Good Samaritan
Both the SUV and the victim's vehicle were damaged in the collision, and witnesses say they are unsure if the alleged hit-and-run driver suffered any injuries as well. Law enforcement officers told reporters that the suspect fled the scene in the truck of a witness who stopped to provide assistance.
The attempted Good Samaritan, a 64-year old man from Staten Island, said he pulled over when he saw the wreckage and tried to help the victims. When he got out of his truck, however, the driver of the SUV jumped inside and sped off. Authorities found the vehicle abandoned somewhere in Staten Island, but have been unable to locate the hit-and-run suspect.
The victims of the incident have not been identified. Police say they suffered severe lacerations as a result of the collision, and have been taken to a hospital for treatment. The Good Samaritan was not injured during the theft.
