The company that owns the commuter ferry that crashed in New York City early this year has settled with many of those who were injured in the accident. The accident happened in January when a ferry carrying over 300 people crashed into a barge and the pier where it was to dock. The ferry had left Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey with passengers bound for work in NYC when there was a problem as it approached its destination dock. The captain of the ferry said that he could not get the engines to respond to his controls. The boat came in to the dock at too high a rate of speed and hit the pier and an adjacent barge. The impact caused a severe jolt to go through the ferry and many people standing, walking or going down stairways were thrown off balance. About 80 people complained of injuries resulting from being thrown to the ground or into railings, walls and other objects. Injured in a boating accident? Boating Company Reaches out to Ferry Accident Victims
The company that owns the ferry involved in the accident took a somewhat unusual approach and contacted those who had been injured rather than just waiting for the claims to come in. About 40 claims had been settled to the victim's satisfaction before going to court. Several additional claims were settled recently as well. Victims that had suffered injuries such as torn shoulder cartilage, knee trauma and head injuries received individual settlements ranging from $20,000 to $80,000. Nearly $1 million has been paid out to victims in settlements to date. Other claims are pending. The boating company also spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to repair the damaged barge and pier.
