NYC Man Struck by Garbage Truck after Trip & Fall

A 31-year-old man who had become a recent resident in New York City was killed after being hit by a sanitation truck. A.S. had moved to NYC from Florida just a few months ago in order to pursue his desire to be an artist and designer. He was walking back to his apartment by himself after 1:00 in the morning on Monday when he tripped over some bags of garbage and fell. The garbage bags had been left on the corner at the intersection for pick up by a Department of Sanitation vehicle. A.S. fell into the crosswalk and was struck by a garbage truck that had just turned onto the street he was crossing. The driver of the truck stopped and called 911. Police and emergency crews arrived at the scene of the accident and A.S. was transported to the nearest hospital where he was pronounced dead. The trash had been placed on the corner by a pizzeria near the location. A summons was issued to the pizzeria for obstructing the sidewalk. Nearby businesses had also put their trash on the sidewalks and street corners. One owner explained that the subway construction had made it so they had to put their trash on the corners in order for it to be picked up.
