Burn injuries may seem less traumatic than other types of injuries but in actual fact, can in many circumstances be just as traumatic, sometimes even more so.
Types of Burn Injuries
Burn injuries are divided into three main categories:
-
First Degree Burns:
- Are mainly on the outermost layer of the skin, the epidermis
- Do not form blisters
- Are somewhat painful
- Do not form scars and will heal on their own
-
Second Degree Burns:
There are two different types of second degree burns. One involves superficial partial thickness burns and the other deep partial thickness burns. These burns can be identified by the following:
- Their moist appearance
- Blisters
- They involve both the epidermis and dermis
- Can be quite painful (nerves are still intact)
-
Third Degree Burns:
These are the most serious types of burns and require medical treatment to heal the injury and may need cosmetic improvements as well. These burns:
- Will have varying colors from white, a waxy look, red or brown
- Involve all skin layers
- Will be dry and lack elasticity
- Do not heal on their own due to their severity
- Will not be painful as the pain sensors have been destroyed and feeling has gone out of the area.
A third degree burn can cause internal injuries to organs and other structures requiring emergency treatment. Being burned in a fire, an explosion or even an electrical burn can necessitate extensive medical treatment and healing time. Reconstructive surgery and skin grafts may be necessary to perform in order to repair the damage and this can become expensive. Burn injuries can happen sometimes as a result of negligence and improper safety precautions.
