With the many thousands of products that are marketed each year to consumers, children's' products tend to be recalled more frequently. When safety standards are violated or a product for children is poorly designed resulting in injury, it can be labeled as a defective product and those responsible can be held liable.
Strollers Found to Be Unsafe
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in coordination with Graco Children's Products, is recalling almost 2 million Quattro and MetroLite strollers which have been linked to the death of four infants. This will be their second stroller recall this year. Cribs and high chairs have also had recalls this year. The current stroller recall is a result of four infants who were strangled between 2003 and 2005. There were additional reports of infants becoming entrapped in the strollers resulting in other types of injury as well.
The Quattro stroller recalls were manufactured prior to November 2006 and the Metro Lite models were manufactured prior to July 2007. These models were actually distributed between the years 2000and 2007. A voluntary industry standard was established in 2008 addressing the size of the opening between the stroller's tray and the bottom of the seat, requiring larger openings in order to prevent children from being trapped or strangled. This was apparently the main problem being addressed when the accidents occurred. The strollers were manufactured in China, their prices ranged from $90-$250 each and were distributed at the following outlets:
- WalMart
- Babies R Us
- Target
- Sears
- Burlington Coat Factory
- Fred Meyer
- Meijers
- AAFES and
- Navy Exchange
