The sister of a woman who was one of the people killed in the September Washington Navy Yard shooting has recently filed a wrongful death suit against the U.S. Navy and the Department of Veteran Affairs. M.K. was one of 12 people who were shot and killed when a civilian contractor opened fire. The shooter, a 34-year-old man, had been investigated by authorities a number of times for gun-related violence. The man was investigated in August by Rhode Island police after an incident where he said he was hearing voices and was being watched, etc. At one point the man, A.A., had sought treatment from the Department of Veterans Affairs because he said he was suffering from insomnia and other issues. He was not admitted to care, however. The police from the August incident had filed a report to the Navy and the information about his insomnia and mental illness complaints was in his file. Nevertheless, he was allowed to work as a civilian contractor in Washington, D.C. and was issued a security pass that allowed him access to various facilities just weeks later despite what should have been noticed as "red flags". On September 16th A.A. used his security pass to enter the Navy Yard with a weapon. He opened fire leaving M.K. and 11 others dead. Police were forced to shoot and kill the man. M.K.'s sister, P.D., has filed a suit against the Navy and Veterans Affairs for failing to protect her sister and other employees from what should have been an easily preventable incident. Work with a personal injury attorney now if you lost a family member or spouse due to negligence.
Sister Seeks nearly $40 Million in Claim
P.D. is seeking $37.5 million on behalf of her deceased sister's two children and other family. The suit alleges severe negligence on the part of the U.S. Navy and Veterans Affairs for not acting on information that clearly alerted to possible dangers in having A.A. contracted for work. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel reportedly admitted that "mistakes were made, that red flags were flying," according to P.D.'s attorney.
