A woman died recently after a suspected intoxicated driver slammed his vehicle into the back of hers. C.K., 38 years old, was going north on U.S. 19 in her small Kia sedan at about 3:15 in the morning when a 21-year-old man driving a Mazda Miata rear-ended her while going approximately 100 mph. The impact caused C.K.'s vehicle to careen across the median and into southbound traffic lanes. Her car burst into flames but it was not clear from reports if the fire reached the cabin of the vehicle. Florida Highway Patrol and fire rescue arrived on the scene and freed the woman from her car. She had suffered severe injuries and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The other driver, R.B., was not seriously injured. Police discovered that he had marijuana with him and he was arrested on charges of marijuana possession and suspicion of driving while intoxicated. A blood sample was taken to test for intoxication. C.K. later died at the hospital which means that R.B. faces the possibility of DUI manslaughter charges and others if the toxicology results reveal that he was indeed under influence of drugs at the time of the crash. Make sure you have the help of a skilled personal injury lawyer if you were hurt in a crash caused by a drunk driver.
Many severe accidents throughout the United States involve individuals driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Nearly 1,000 people are killed in DUI accidents every year in the state of Florida and many more are injured and survive. In addition to any criminal charges brought against a drunk driver, you may be entitled to substantial compensation from that reckless individual as well by filing a claim in civil court. You may be able to recover financial and punitive damages if that driver was the cause of your injuries or losses.
