Ex Nascar Driver in Auto Accident

In Indianapolis, ex-NASCAR driver Shane Hmiel was seriously injured Saturday night during qualifying for the U.S. Auto Racing Club's Silver crown race at Terre Haute Action Track.

Before the car accident, Shame Hmiel was a NASCAR driver and in 2006 he was banned for life from racing in NASCAR after failing three drug tests.  The 30-year-old driver is listed as being in critical condition with head injuries after being airlifted to Indianapolis' Methodist Hospital following the accident.

A USAC news release said HMiel is currently in the hospital's intensive care unit and is expected to have surgery within 24 hours of arriving at the hospital.

According to the Tribune-Star of Terre Haute, Hmiel sustained the injury when his No. 17 car collided with the outside wall between the third and fourth turns.  The car then rolled over several times, causing damage that compromised the safety of the protective roll cage.

When asked to comment on the condition of his son, Steve Hmiel said that his son has a "long road to recovery."
