In Texas, a mother and son were named as defendants in a personal injury lawsuit. Margaret Mills, who is currently on trial for felony theft charges, and her son were listed as defendants in a
car accident lawsuit filed by Matthew and Nicole Short.
Reports indicate that Matthew and Nicole Short are seeking an unspecified amount of damages from Mills and her son, Richard Coke Mills III, for serious injuries that were suffered by the Shorts' children during a car accident. The accident took place in Waco, Texas on April 30th.
Margaret Mills is 67 years old and she is currently on trial in Waco's 54th State District Court for pleading guilty to third-degree felony theft charges. The theft charges were brought against her while she was serving as Executive Director of Downtown Waco Inc.
According to Mills, the personal injury filed against her and her son has settled for an undisclosed amount. She said the lawsuit was settled by her insurance company and that the lawsuit is known as a "friendly suit". A "friendly suit" is a type of lawsuit that must be filed when minors are involved so the court can appoint an attorney to ensure that the child's rights are protected.
Court documents indicate that the personal injury lawsuit is pending.
The Waco Police Department accident report discloses that Richard Coke Mills III was driving his mother's car when he was arrested for suspicion of drunk driving. The DWI charges against him remain pending. He was also arrested for suspicion of DWI in October 2006, although those charges were never pursued by law enforcement.
