One man was killed and others suffered minor injuries after an intoxicated man got behind the wheel of his car over the weekend. J.M., 28 years old, was driving his pickup truck on Saturday morning when reports say he swerved into the bike lane and struck a 63-year-old man on a bicycle. The impact killed the cyclist instantly. J.M. allegedly sped off from the scene and police were notified shortly after the fatal accident. J.M. sideswiped three cars as he sped down the roadway. Two patrol cars were fairly far behind him trying to stop the driver without causing a high speed pursuit situation. The driver on the run was finally stopped when he, unfortunately, slammed into the back of an SUV. J.M. and several occupants in the other vehicles he crashed into suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital. Driver Taken into Custody
J.M. was taken into custody and jailed in Fort Lauderdale after he was released from the hospital. Records indicate that the man was on probation for a DUI conviction in March of last year and now faces severe charges for the current incident. He has been charged with violations of a driver's license restriction, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and DUI causing death. The cyclist who died after being struck was a jeweler who had immigrated to the United States from Jamaica in 1979. He was an avid bicyclist and spent a great deal of time doing long bike rides. He is survived by his mother, three sisters, a brother and a nephew. Reports do not indicate whether or not his family will be pursuing a wrongful death suit against J.M.
