Driver Arraigned on Drunk Driving Charges in Connection to Fatal Pedestrian Accident

A 43-year-old Long Island man is facing serious charges after being involved in an accident which left a man dead. R.C., 81 years old, had just gotten off the bus and was crossing the road at about 5:45 in the morning when the accident happened. The victim had successfully crossed several lanes of the Hempstead Turnpike when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle. J.T. was driving a late model sedan and either did not see the elderly man crossing the roadway or was unable to stop his vehicle in time. R.C. was struck and suffered severe injuries. J.T. remained at the scene and emergency services were called to the accident location. Unfortunately, R.C. did not survive his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. J.T. was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and was arraigned on charges of DWI involving a fatality. The suspect's vehicle was impounded and will be inspected to determine if there was any mechanical or safety defect which may have contributed to the fatal incident. Reports did not indicate whether or not R.C.'s family will be pursuing a civil suit in the matter.
