According to a news report by CBS, trampoline parks are seeing a rising rate of injuries to the public who use them. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued a statement discouraging the use of these parks due to evidence found about increasing injuries, including fractures of the ankle, shin, and chest area, spinal injuries, and head and neck injuries which can lead to brain damage in rare cases. The AAP's report has shown 70 injuries for every 100,000 youngsters between the ages of 0 and 4 who used a trampoline with 160 injuries for every 100,000 kids between the ages of 5 to 14 who used them. This translates to approximately 98,000 injuries per year.
Because of the rising number of injuries related to these parks, regulations in both California and Utah have been proposed by legislators which would address safety concerns. Currently, legislation in California is pending that would implement an inspection program similar to those for amusement parks as well as add requirements pertaining to insurance, the training of employees, and the reporting of injuries. That bill was prompted by the death of a 30 year-old man after he broke his neck in a trampoline park in Arizona last year.
Emergency room trauma staff at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center has reported 52 trampoline park-related injuries at their facility from May 2011 to November 2012, including dislocated feet, brain hemorrhages, and paralysis.
