According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, more than 103,000 traffic accidents occurred on Arizona roads and highways in 2011. More than 49,000 injuries took place as well as 835 deaths. Most of these accidents occurred in urban areas. 5,537 accidents were alcohol-related. The most common type of accident was the rear-end collision. The most common type of driver error was speeding too fast for the conditions at hand. The largest percentage of those injured at 55 percent was drivers, followed by passengers at 23 percent. The remainder were pedestrians and bicyclists. Alcohol played a role in 31 percent of all fatal car crashes that year.
Arizona's crash rate has declined over the last five years, though in 2010 its fatality rate at 1.27 per 100 million miles traveled was slightly more than the national average of 1.1 per million miles. In Pinal County, it was estimated that the economic losses connected with traffic collision injuries stood at close to $42 million in 2011 while the same cost for traffic collision fatalities in the county exceeded $112 million. The costs involve a combination of wage and production losses, medical expenses, administrative costs, motor vehicle damage, and employer costs. The number of fatal crashes in 2011, which was 754, exceeded those of the two previous years in the state. Thanksgiving weekend and the 4th of July holiday periods saw the highest number of fatalities.
