How Driver Negligence Causes Car Accidents
Did you know that the most common cause for all traffic-related accidents is driver negligence? Negligence is defined as a failure to act with proper caution or care under the circumstances, resulting in physical or emotional injury to another person. In a situation involving a car accident, this would involve a driver who disobeyed a traffic law or was otherwise careless and therefore caused a collision with another vehicle or with a pedestrian, cyclist or fixed object. If this accident caused injury to one or more persons, these victims may be able to file a personal injury claim against the negligent driver.
Driver negligence may take on many forms, any of which have the potential to be catastrophic for other drivers on the road. Speeding is a common culprit, as is driving while distracted and drunk driving. Speeding limits a driver’s ability to respond to changes in traffic, traffic signals or emergency situations. It also increases the force of a collision and increases the potential for an accident to cause serious injury. A driver who is distracted may take his or her attention off the road or hands off the wheel for only a moment, but that’s all it takes to lose control of a vehicle, veer out of a lane or fail to notice stopped traffic ahead. A drunk driver will have impaired mental and/or physical abilities and a delayed reaction time. In any of these or similar situations, a driver’s lack of responsibility and concern for the safety of others places everyone in the vicinity at risk.
