The family of a Massachusetts teenager who suffered catastrophic health damage after taking Children's Motrin was awarded $63 million with interest by a jury in February of this year. When she was seven years old, the girl was given Motrin ibuprofen to reduce a fever which caused her suffer what is known as toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). TEN is a condition in which the mucus membranes become inflamed and the outer layer of the skin burns off. The girl's attorney likened the devastating condition to "your worst sunburn times 1,000." The girl's throat, eyes, mouth, esophagus, and respiratory system became so inflamed that she had to be put into an induced coma. As a result of the condition, she lost 90 percent of her skin, was blinded, lost 80 percent of her lung capacity, and suffered short-term memory loss.
In their lawsuit against the Children's Motrin manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson, the family asserted that the drug maker failed to make adequate warning of the potential risk for such life-threatening side effects. The jury trial last five weeks with the girl being awarded $50 million in legal compensation and her parents each receiving $6.5 million. With interest, the family will receive approximately $109 million total in damages. In another case in Pennsylvania, $10 million was awarded to a girl in 2011 who suffered a similar reaction to Children's Motrin. In that case, the girl lost 84 percent of her skin, suffered blindness, and brain damage as well.
