1 Dead, 2 Injured in Car Accident

The Accident

Around 3 a.m. the women was traveling on the southbound side of the freeway at the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway, when she lost control of her car and hit a stopped DPS patrol car that was parked on the shoulder of the freeway. She had reportedly already been driving erratically when she lost control of the vehicle. The impact of the car accident caused both vehicles to roll.

DPS Officer and Civilian Observer Injured

The 49-year-old veteran DPS Officer Eric Lamb was just finishing up a report of an unrelated accident. He's been with DPS for nine years. Civilian observer, Richard L. Jones, of Kentucky, was with him. Lamb was seriously injured, but managed to get out of the vehicle on his own. Jones suffered less serious injuries.

A separate driver had called 911 to report the woman's erratic driving. This is when she was still on Loop 202 heading for the 101. "They reported that the driver was all over the road, making erratic lane changes, swerving," said DPS Officer Carrick Cook.

Driver Dies

The woman died at the scene. Investigators have not released her name, saying only that she was a 48-year-old from Vail. They are unsure if distraction or alcohol played a part in causing her erratic driving.
